An Introduction to Grenada

One of the southeasternmost Caribbean islands, Grenada, is a component of the West Indies in the Caribbean Sea. Grenada is a popular vacation spot for both families and lone explorers because of its abundance of spices and gorgeous turquoise beaches. The food is wonderful, the waterways are beautiful, and the people are friendly. These claims are accurate around the island, but they are particularly valid in Saint George Parish’s tourism attractions. This area contains the college town of True Blue, the award-winning beach of Grand Anse, and the capital city of Saint George’s.

Although the island is home to many breathtaking locations, Saint George Parish is particularly convenient to get there on foot or by minibus (more on that later). The West Indies Beer Company in neighboring Lance Aux Epines (pronounced “Lance ah peen”), the cafes and restaurants surrounding Grand Anse, and the brilliant seas of Morne Rogue Beach are particularly noteworthy.

Is Vacationing in Saint George Parish Safe? Is Grenada Safe?

The safety of Saint George Parish is excellent. Walking was my primary mode of transportation, and during the more than 100 miles I covered, I never felt uncomfortable or had any problems. Although I mostly hiked during the day, I did take a few nighttime walks in Lance Aux Epines. Extreme caution should be used when driving or walking along roadways because the laws of the road are merely courteous recommendations.

Extra care should be used when traveling alone as a woman. Grenada’s hyper-masculine culture, which is prevalent throughout the Caribbean, doesn’t appear to be abating anytime soon. Unwanted sexual advances and cat-calling are two ways that behavior shows up. During her time at Saint George’s, a friend of mine reported experiencing numerous instances of sexual harassment, but she said that none of it was particularly frightening or aggressive. She characterized it as a fact of life for a young woman traveling alone in the area.

Naturally, I would advise women traveling alone to exercise extra caution. Avoid going on a nighttime stroll by yourself, and avoid meeting strangers in odd places. Stick to Saint George Parish out of prudence, even if wandering alone shouldn’t be a problem (my friend also went everywhere on foot).

How Much Does a Vacation in Grenada Cost?

Grenada offers excellent value for a low-cost getaway. Grenada is accessible to almost everyone on a budget because of its abundance of reasonably priced entertainment alternatives and one of the Caribbean’s lowest housing expenses.

If the astute planner is prepared to forgo several showers and beach proximity, they can discover an Airbnb for less than $1,000 per month. However, since nights can get rather warm, I would advise maintaining air conditioning as a luxury. Make sure you only run the air conditioner when you are in your unit to reduce your electricity expenses. About 45 minutes before going to bed, you should turn on the air conditioner in my bedroom, and when ready to fall asleep, turn it off. In this manner, you could stay cool all night long without having to pay astronomical electricity bills to the host.

Grocery Stores and Restaurants

Generally speaking, restaurant food is less expensive than in the US, though this varies significantly depending on the kind of establishment. Restaurants run by locals were typically far more delicious and far less expensive than those serving visitors.

No matter where you’re staying, asking the locals will help you uncover the best meals in Grenada! This is how I discovered many unique jewels that I discuss a little later. In addition to being more affordable, the meal will taste better and offer a more genuine experience.

There are some excellent options for local grocers if you want to prepare your own meals in Grenada, which is something I would strongly advise. Real Value IGA, the biggest market in Saint George Parish, is situated just in front of Grand Anse Beach in the Spiceland Mall. The greatest assortment of reasonably priced goods, including many typical things in the USA, may be found here.

Food Fair is a fantastic choice for the cheapest essentials. Despite having a smaller range overall and none of the international alternatives, I thought their prices were cheaper than Real Value IGA. Nevertheless, it is your best option if you need the essentials at the lowest possible price.

Finding Vacation Apartments in Grenada

Generally speaking, you will get greater rates if you are more flexible and plan farther in advance. I virtually always use Airbnb to make reservations, and I always use the same basic procedure to locate excellent offers.

Seek out rentals that are off the main drag, have a few extremely good reviews, and give a discount for stays longer than a month. Making a reservation with a more recent host frequently results in substantial savings. Newer hosts are more inclined to provide tips and information and often go above and above to make your stay comfortable. However, not all listings are completely honest, and not all hosts are good. Compare the potential unknowns with the cost savings from a more recent rental. Before I agree to make a reservation with a host, I personally check that they have at least a few good reviews.

Booking Affordable Flights

It can be a little challenging to find inexpensive flights from the US to Grenada. Maurice Bishop International Airport is the sole international airport, and it’s a tiny one. Atlanta (ATL), Charlotte (CLT), New York (JFK), and Miami (MIA) are the only airports that offer flights to Grenada. American Airlines, Delta, and JetBlue are the only three American airlines that provide flights to Grenada. Planning will be crucial if you’re not in one of those markets.

A wise searcher who starts looking for bargains well in advance can find a better deal, but I was able to find a round-trip ticket to Grenada for roughly $600. First, begin your planning at least five months beforehand. Create triggers on Google Flights to receive alerts when airfares for your trip decrease. Additional businesses, like Scotts Cheap Flights, can assist you in locating even more affordable flights from a few nearby airports. Include important market airports that you can fly to in order to receive the greatest rates possible. This can save you a lot of money, but it’s a logistical nightmare.

What is the Spoken Language in Grenada?

English! As you travel, you may hear some Creole English and Creole French, but English is the official language of Grenada and is used by nearly everyone. You may encounter more residents who speak only French or Creole languages when you leave Saint George Parish and head into the less-visited northern parishes, but you should have no trouble communicating with them otherwise.

Best time to visit Grenada

With typical daytime temperatures ranging from 25°C (77°F)in January and February to 31°C (91°F) in July and August, Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique all have tropical climates. The ideal months to visit in terms of weather are December through April, which are the dry high-season winter months. The cost of lodging and airfare, however, is also much higher. The hurricane season, which lasts from July to November, peaks in September and October, making these the worst months to go. Being careful is always a good idea, especially after Hurricane Ivan devastated Grenada in 2004. The first half of August is the most exciting time to go because of carnival, which transforms the islands into a huge party.
