The typical daily temperature in Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique is tropical, with highs of 25°C in January and February and 31°C in July and August. The best time to go is during the dry, high-season winter months of December through April. However, the cost of lodging and airfare is also much higher. During the height of the hurricane season, which lasts from July to November, September and October are the worst months to go. It’s always a good idea to exercise caution, especially after Hurricane Ivan devastated Grenada in 2004. Carnival transforms the islands into a huge celebration during the first half of August, making it the most exciting time to visit.
Hurricane Ivan – 2004
On September 7, 2004, Hurricane Ivan passed just south of Grenada, causing extensive damage. According to Wikipedia, it was the deadliest hurricane to hit Grenada in fifty years.
When we asked local Grenadians about Hurricane Ivan, they all told us that they remembered it clearly—and not in a positive way. Several of them also told us about the roofs that were lost on their houses.
My heart goes out to everyone affected by such catastrophic disasters, as I lost everything I owned in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina struck the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Hurricane Beryl – 2024
When Hurricane Beryl crossed the Grenadines on July 1, 2024, it left behind devastating damage in the Grenadian islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, as well as the Grenadian islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
When it struck, we were only thirty nautical miles south in St. George’s, Grenada. Fortunately for us and the majority of other vessels in Grenada, Hurricane Beryl only caused minimal damage to the north end of the island.
In Carriacou, where we cleared into Grenada approximately three weeks earlier, nearly all of the boats—including those nestled away in the mangroves and hauled out in boatyards—did not have the same luck.
